I had the pleasure of spending time with two of the Internationally adored musical act, The Green Children, this past weekend. And I don’t use the word adored lightly. Besides the fact that I find both Milla Sunde and Marlow Bevan, the two leads of the Band, adorable in so many ways, they are truly adored by their fans.
First of all, I have never been to a concert where the audience was so mixed. The concert was held at the world famous Viper Room on Sunset in Hollywood, California. This is primarily a rock venue and it draws primarily rock fans usually in the age group of 21 through maybe fifty. I am sure younger kids would want to be able to go, but since it they serve drinks, 21 and up it is.
But The Green Children audience had people even older than that, dressed as if they weren’t people who would normally go to a rock venue, coming out to see them. There were older married couples, couples on dates, all kinds of single people, many gay males and lesbian women and people of so many diverse races. It was a joy to see, because, in a sense The Green Children are not only bringing awareness to their causes of choice, like women in Bangladesh, but bringing awareness to ourselves and each other.
I felt like I noticed more people talking to each other who didn’t know each other, more than one normally sees at concerts. It felt that people were in a good space and were not only excited to see one of their favorite bands on stage, but just excited to be. Maybe it was just me, or maybe I am such a fan that I wanted to know how people felt about them. Since the venue was running behind schedule, there was a bit of time before The Green Children came on, so I did my own informal survey, out of curiosity.
Though I was there with friends myself, I went around and talked to a few people. It was interesting to learn how people had gotten there, and what The Green Children meant to them. And as they spoke, they had smiles on their faces.
Another thing I noticed is that all the band members are that way too, and their friends. I have seen them perform several times now, and have gotten this same feeling each time, and decided I should finally write about it, because this is a phenomenon that they are creating and I expect it to grow and grow. I was especially happy to learn that they are now represented again, by another big label and that their CD, not only available in many music stores and on line, of course, is now available at Whole Foods stores across the Country. This will help increase their fame among people who get it, and then it can grow more from there.
“Get it,” what is there to get? At the very least, you can get good music. The Green Children’s music is good, fun, feel good, and mainly upbeat, and the lyrics cover all kinds of topic, romantic love, consciousness love, etc. There is something there for everyone. They are enjoyable to watch and listen to, and much of the proceeds from the sales of their CDs goes to help various causes around the world, like building hospitals in undeveloped areas, and micro loans to impoverished women, and the like.
And there’s so much more to “get.” But “getting” is not really what The Green Children are about, they are more about giving. As I have gotten to know them more personally over the past couple years, I can say that this is true and not just a marketing ploy. They are the real deal.
