Tap Into Joy Through the Art of Presence (Even When Times Are Tough) by Diana Cole
September is National Self-Care Awareness Month, and what better way to celebrate than by giving yourself permission to return to your joy? One powerful way to tap into joy is by honing the art of presence — something we can do even in the most challenging of times.
As we continue to struggle with the realities of the coronavirus, protests, violence, and the current political landscape, learn the ease and value of finding inner peace, even as outer peace becomes harder and harder to find.
Joy Through Presence in 3 Steps
Each moment can be delicious, and the lesson plans for achieving this aren’t tedious, dull, or difficult. These lessons are a great relief, inviting each of us to relax more, fret less, and let life take care of itself.
- Don’t wait to be happy until your conditions change: What is happening outside of you never gives you the happy feeling you’re waiting for, at least not for long. Every single day of your life, you have the opportunity to decide how you will feel. Let this sink in at the deepest level. Make this choice every morning before you rise from your bed. Say out loud to yourself, “Life is a gift, and I am grateful to have this day to create, to contribute, to celebrate, and to love.”
- Enjoy each moment NOW, no matter what: Enjoy each moment and savor it for what it is: a gift — one you’ve given yourself to learn and grow. Make the decision to go out into your life today with positive energy and watch the birth of happiness within you. The better you feel, the more you appreciate each moment.
- Practice “higher thinking living”: Symbolically speaking, this is you living at a higher elevation, where the air you breathe is more nourishing. You experience more meaningful interactions, more good-feeling emotions, more inspired ideas, and more intimacy with your world. The lens of perception through which you see your life begins to change. More beauty appears. More possibilities open to you. You know yourself better as your understanding of your whole life deepens.
